SEO Tip - Benefiting From Multiple Domains

How can you best utilize multiple domains to benefit your main Web site?

For example, you have a Web site called colorfulanimals.com. You have also collected domains that each describe a different parts of your business that appeal to different people. They could be greendogs.com, redcats.com and bluebirds.com.

How can you best use these domains to benefit your main site without diluting your SEO values or confusing your target audience?

If you want to avoid the time and expense of creating distinctly different sites for each domain - with no duplicate content - then use 301 permanent redirects. The redirects should point each domain to the appropriate section of your main site.

These targeted keyword rich domains can then be used for off site promotion:
  • links in appropriate directories
  • links in paid search ads
  • links in social media postings
  • links in online yellow pages
  • links in print ads
If the redirect points to a specific sub-page remember to update this redirect if you change your page addresses. Or to be safe, redirect to the main domain and provide clear navigation to each section on the home page.

.CN: From 2 million to 10 million in 12 months

China is on pace to surpass Germany as the world’s most popular country code top-level domain (ccTLD) — in about two or three months. It’s no surprise that China would surpass Germany. What is surprising is China’s rate of growth, as visualized in the graph.

Germany currently leads with roughly 11.5 million .de registrations, but China recently surpassed the 10 million mark, and is adding 20,000 registrations per day.

Keep in mind, this 10 million statistic includes all permutations of .cn, such as gov.cn and edu.cn. The .cn domain registered by companies inside and outside of China, such as Intel.cn and Google.cn, accounts for 6 million of the 10 million registrations.

MySpace wins UK domain name that pre-dated its service

Social networking company MySpace has won the right to have the domain name myspace.co.uk transferred to it despite the fact that it was registered six years before MySpace was founded.

The fact that the myspace.co.uk address led to a 'parked' page with adverts for social networking sites including MySpace was taken to be evidence of an abusive registration and the domain name was given to MySpace.

Google Combats Domain Name Loophole

The online advertising leader Google Inc. said Friday it would help make it less lucrative to tie up millions of Internet addresses using a loophole and keep those domain names from legitimate individuals and businesses.

Over the next few weeks, Google will start looking for names that are repeatedly registered and dropped within a five-day grace period for full refunds.

Google's AdSense program would exclude those names so no one can generate advertising revenue from claiming them temporarily, a practice known as domain name tasting — the online equivalent of buying expensive clothes on a charge card only to return them for a full refund after wearing them to a party.

"We believe that this policy will have a positive impact for users and domain purchasers across the Web," Google spokesman Brandon McCormick said.
